mLab

mLab, is as I call all my work with my students, both of them, at costa rica institute of technology and at hochschule für gestaltung schwäbisch gmünd in germany.

in both universities I make at least a course per semester, because of this you can find results twice a year.

these works can be done in several different branches:

mixed reality

data visualisation

app design and usability

in this topic we work with non conventional interfaces, it means, to explore new technologies to interact between computer and human being. new devices like kinect, leap motion, emotive, etc. are tested and explored, to figure out better ways to introduce data.

this kind of projects are about “big data”,

the topic is: how we can visualise big amount of data in a intelligent way in order to get more information from them?

I make this kind of projects with my students in my lectures of information visualisation of master degree programs in Intel o HP (hewlett packard), as well as graduation tesis in bachelor and master degrees.

1S-2018 IoT smart speakers

This semester at the Tecnológico de Costa Rica (1S-2018), we did a project aimed at the "Internet of Things." The idea was to imagine that the new intelligent speakers (like Alexa of Amazon, Siri of apple or Hi Google) can project an image and communicate with the user.

The concept then included visualization of the music being played, viewing of WhatsApp or Tweeter notifications, and display of the voice commands given to the wizard, as well as its sound when it responds.

The following works are part of the results.

ss 2018 mirror, mirror on the wall

This semester at Hochschule für Gestaltung Schwäbisch Gmünd in my lecture of interaction design and Internet of Things (summer semester 2018) we made a project that we named “mirror, mirror on the wall”

The idea was, take the concept of the magic mirror as inspiration and make distortions and graphic treatments of the camera image. All students had to design physic interfaces for each work, with a Makey-Makey, leap motion or/and an Arduino to make interactions.

ws 2017 gravity

This semester at Hochschule für Gestaltung Schwäbisch Gmünd in my lecture of interaction design and Internet of Things (winter semester 2017) we made games with virtual gravity.

The idea was, take the concept of gravity as inspiration and make virtual games. All students had to design physic interfaces for each game, with a Makey-Makey, leap motion or/and an Arduino to make the controls.

se diseño una caja de proyección con efecto pepper ghost y en esta se podía mezclar proyecciones con objetos reales (el diagrama de la caja esta en los archivos relacionados de esta página). se pedía cierta interactividad de modo que los estudiantes podían escoger entre usar kinect, leap motion o computer vision.

estos estudios combinan el uso de sistemas de partículas con diferentes instalaciones y proyecciones. la idea general es producir una proyección interactiva que sea controlable con las manos a partir de los datos del sensor leap motion,

graduation project of nikole arguedas-elizondo mentored by me. she worked with cancer researchers from universidad de costa rica, they work on breast cancer and associated factors like sport habits, number of children and so on.

undergraduate projects

these projects are a part of 6th-semester studies in information design engineering at tec costa rica.

we make different types of usability analysis (using my usability cookbook) to design our applications or to evaluating interaction in tools already in web o market.

interactive infographics

in this subject we design different types of infographics, students begin with a print version (A0 format) to describe a scientific concepts in a very simple way. complexity of these concepts have to be hight in order to offer a challenge to students.

later they make a interactive tool to explain the same concepts.

the theme for this semester was CMOS. students have to explain how is made a microcrochip and fundamentals about its function.

the target public is first semester students from electronic engineer. challenge is to explain the process for this nicho.

the theme for this semester was animal locomotion. students can choose with which animal want to work.

the target public is non-specialists; average people. challenge is to explain locomotion process for this people.
